Peter LaBerge (’13), one of GFA’s most active and burgeoning writers and photographers, recently won the 2011 Renee Duke Youth Award for human rights in poetry. Peter wrote Grietas/Cracks, a series of poems on the Cuban dissident experience, as a part of an independent project for his Spanish class. Having interviewed a number of exiled Cuban writers and read widely on the challenges to free expression in Cuba, Peter has written a wonderfully sensitive and poignant series of poems. For his upcoming Spanish project, Peter is working on publishing a bilingual volume of poems written by the Cuban-American poets with whom he was in contact earlier this fall.
Grietas/Cracks is available in both English and Spanish at the Poets for Human Rights site.
